The Bio-Energy Capital Grant Scheme is part of the UK Environmental Transformation Fund (ETF) funded by the DECC (Department of Energy & Climate Change) and provides capital grants towards the cost of equipment for the installation of biomass-fuelled heat and/or combined heat and power (CHP) projects (including anaerobic digestion). The Bio-Energy Capital Grant Scheme is aimed at businesses, organisations and charities in commercial, industrial and community sectors.
The grant is designed to cover up to a maximum of 40% of the difference in the cost of installing biomass or CHP equipment compared to a fossil fuel alternative. There is no minimum grant but the maximum per installation is £500,000. For more information on the Bio-Energy Capital Grant Scheme visit follow the link to their website. The sixth round of Bio-Energy Capital Grant Scheme applications in England (see below for similar schemes in other UK countries) ended earlier in 2010 and a new round has not yet been announced.
There are similar schemes to the Bio-Energy Capital Grant Scheme available in Wales and Scotland as detailed below:
- Wales – The Wood Energy Business Scheme 2 offers grants to micro-businesses, SMEs and social enterprises. More information can be found on the Forestry Commission website.
- Scotland – Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can apply for Scottish Biomass Heat Scheme funding which offers grants for up to 50% of the difference in the cost of installing biomass or CHP equipment compared to a fossil fuel alternative (maximum funding of £100,000 per installation). More information can be found at the Scottish Government website. The third round of the Biomass Heat Scheme has now closed.
- We are not aware of a similar scheme currently available in Northern Ireland.
