The British Wind Energy Association is the trade and professional body for the UK wind and marine renewable energy industries. Created in 1978, the British Wind Energy Association is the leading renewable energy trade association in the UK with over 310 corporate members. Set up originally to champion wind power, the association has also been involved with the promotion of wave and tidal energy since 2004.
The primary purpose of the British Wind Energy Association is to promote the use of wind power in the UK. They are involved in research and co-ordinating statistics, they lobby the government and are an important information source for both the public and their members. In addition they are the organisers of an annual renewable energy conference which was held in Glasgow in 2006.
With the UK recognised as having the most attractive market for wind energy, the British Wind Energy Association promote wind power in this country and also work closely with the European Wind Energy Association on matters of European policy. It is estimated that the UK wind power market will expand to provide as much as 8% of the UK’s electricity requirements by the year 2010, a large increase from the current level of 1%.
The British Wind Energy Association has a comprehensive website, which includes a wide variety of information, including lists of the UK’s operational wind farms, those awaiting planning, those for which consent has been received and those in construction.
