If you would like to support a charitable organisation and ‘do your bit’ for the environment by recycling, there are lots of charity recycling options available to you. Some charities sell the donated items and use the money for their causes whilst others refurbish the equipment for use in developing countries. Below are details of a number of charity recycling websites which might be of interest.
- Scouts Appeal is a scheme for Scouts to recycle mobile phones, PDAs and printer cartridges in order to raise money for their group.
- The Association of Charity Shops has a database of charity shops in the UK so is a great place to find somewhere to donate second hand clothes, unwanted gifts and household items and get involved in charity recycling.
- Cartridges 4 Charity accept toner and ink cartridges and mobile phones which are sold for reuse or recycling. The profits from this are then split between three charities; Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland, See Ability and Cardiac Risk in the Young.
- CDs for Good Causes collects CDs and DVDs for good causes! For every recyclable CD and DVD donated 50p is given to the charity of your choice.
- Computer Aid International accepts PCs and peripherals from companies and individuals. The computers are then used in schools in developing countries.
- Computers for African Schools accept PCs and peripherals for use in schools in Africa. They have depots in Reading, Cheltenham and Bristol.
- The Furniture Re-use Network is the national co-ordinator for furniture collection companies. Their website has a database of companies throughout the country which take second hand furniture and appliances.
- Help the Aged collect mobile phones for charity recycling for which they receive at least £5 per phone.
- Mopay collect and recycle mobile phones. You get paid for your phone and Mopay donate part of the value to charity or, if you choose, you can donate the total value.
- Office Green Technologies collect mobile phones with the proceeds donated to charity.
- Oxfam what_you_can_do/recycle/index.htm accept mobile phones, ink cartridges, computers and more to raise money by charity recycling. A phone is worth on average £5 and an ink cartridge £1-£2 to the charity. You can also donate clothes and household items to their shops for resale.
- Recycle 4 Charity collect inkjets, printer cartridges and mobile phones with a proportion of the proceeds from the sale thereof going to charity.
- Recycling Appeal works with over 100 charities, raising money by collecting mobile phones, PDAs and ink cartridges. You can choose which charity you wish to support with your donations.
- Sense support/recycling/ collect mobile phones and ink cartridges to raise money for deaf and blind children. They also take clothes and household items for sale in their charity shops.
- Sofa Project is based in Bristol and Bath and collects unwanted, second hand furniture and appliances for resale.
- The Woodland Trust will receive £2.50 for each mobile phones donated regardless of its age or condition and also collect ink cartridges to recycle and raise money.
