Community Sustainable Energy Programme

The Community Sustainable Energy Programme has now closed to new applicants and there will be no further funds made available - December 2010

The Community Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP) is run by BRE www.bre.co.uk with funds awarded by the Big Lottery Fund. The Community Sustainable Energy Programme is aimed at community organisations in England such as charities, schools and community groups (a full list of eligible organisations can be found on the CSEP website) which are looking to install microgeneration technologies.

The funds available for the Community Sustainable Energy Programme consist of two ‘pots’, one of £8 million for the installation of microgeneration technology and energy efficiency measures and one of £1 million for project development into whether such an installation is worthwhile.

In terms of the project development funding section of the Community Sustainable Energy Programme, the money is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis up to a maximum of £5000 or 75% of the cost of the study (whichever is lower). Such a study must be carried out by one of the approved consultants listed on the CSEP website.

The capital grants part of the Community Sustainable Energy Programme offers grants of up to £50,000 or 50% of the costs (whichever is lower) of installing microgeneration technologies such as solar power, wind power or other renewable energy technologies (see CSEP website for full list). The grant can also cover energy efficiency measures such as insulation or heating controls in conjunction with the installation of microgeneration technology where such measures are not already in place. These grants are awarded in a competitive scheme with quarterly selection panels which are likely to run until the end of 2010. The installers of the equipment must be registered with the government Microgeneration Certification Scheme.
