The latest paperback book from the Fragile Earth series from Alistair Sawday’s, Do Humans Dream of Electric Cars?, has been created in conjunction with Sustrans as a guide to sustainable travel. Published in June 2009, this new slim-line book is designed to help readers think about how they might travel without always using the car.

The design of this book made it a surprisingly easy read despite the amount of facts and figures it contains. By breaking up the text with witty illustrations the reader is drawn onto the next section, and many of the facts do make you sit up and think about the damage modern travel is inflicting on the earth. The book just about manages not to be too preachy whilst aiming to combat many perceived ‘problems’ with, for example, cycling instead of driving. The book also contains loads of web links where further information can be sought on the different areas of sustainable travel, inviting readers to find out more and become better informed about the options available.

This is a great book if you are thinking about how you can make your lifestyle greener, with information on a wide range of subjects from cycling to work and avoiding air travel to alternative fuels and transition towns. It would also make a good gift or even an educational aid for school children doing environmental projects.
