In a similar way to the EU Energy labels for household appliances, the British Fenestration Rating Council rates double glazed windows and doors (not conservatories) from A to G for energy efficiency. This rating system is recognised by Building Regulations and those products rated from A to B also receive the Energy Saving Recommended Logo from the Energy Saving Trust. The latest ‘low emissivity’ glass has an invisible metal coating on one of the sheets of glass which keeps warmth in the building in winter and heat out in the summer. In addition, energy efficient double glazed windows and doors can be expected to keep out wind and rain and resist condensation. They can be made from PVC-U (sometimes known as u-PVC), aluminium, steel or timber and the rating is for the whole window or door, not just the glass.
