Electric Cars

There are a variety of different types of electric cars (and vans) available on the market, from the traditional battery powered vehicle to more modern fuel cell driven and hybrid models. Battery powered electric cars include milk floats, electric scooters as well as larger vehicles, but these have had issues in the past with lack of power and the length of time the battery will run before being recharged. They tend, therefore, to primarily be used in urban areas where speeds are lower and distances traveled shorter.

Several major manufacturers have been developing more modern electric cars as consumers become more aware of the impact on the environment of using petrol and diesel. In addition, fossil fuels are not in never-ending supply, so alternatives will be needed. Hybrid electric cars use a combination of petrol and electric to power the engine and more information can be found on these on our hybrid cars page. Fuel cell vehicles are other types of electric cars, which use hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. This has the advantage of not emitting greenhouse gases, thus providing a sustainable source of fuel. More information on these electric cars can be found on our fuel cell page

Electric cars can have the advantage of being exempt from road tax and the London congestion charge due to their environmental benefits. A tax disc must still be displayed, but this is sometimes available at no charge. Check with the DVLA to confirm whether your vehicle is exempt.
