It is therefore worthwhile choosing an energy efficient dishwasher as this will save you money and be beneficial to the environment. An energy efficient dishwasher could in fact save you £15 a year compared to a non-efficient model.
So how do you find an energy efficient dishwasher? In the first instance you should look for the EU Energy label which grades appliances from A to G, with A being the most energy efficient. In addition, the Energy Efficiency Recommended logo assures you that the product meets or exceeds energy efficiency requirements and is backed by the government. Your energy efficient dishwasher should be a similar price to other less economical models, and bear in mind the savings you will make over the life of the product.
Regardless of the energy efficiency of your dishwasher, there are ways that you can save even more money, energy and water. Always try and wait until your dishwasher is full (although not overloaded) or, if this is not possible, select the half load or economy setting. You can also select the lower temperature programmes as modern detergents work just as well as at higher temperatures. Dishwashers actually use more energy in the drying of the dishes than the washing, so why not air dry them? Some dishwashers have an air dry switch, but if not, simply turn the machine off after the final rinse and prop open the door to allow the dishes to dry.
