Energy Efficient Home Building

Energy Efficient Home Building

Energy efficient home building came more to the fore during 2006 with the introduction of new regulations in April that year designed to make new homes more energy efficient as part of the governments aim to combat climate change. As a result energy efficient home building is not only becoming the norm but is also a key selling factor for many properties as consumers look for ways to reduce their own carbon footprint.

The building regulations regarding energy efficient home building differ between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, although they are very similar. Two key areas cover air tightness of the building to ensure minimal heat loss, and the overall carbon dioxide emission rate of the building which should be within certain limits. For more information on this visit the Energy Saving Trust website.

As well as considering these elements of energy efficient home building, developers often also look at areas such as the provision of heating and lighting. Energy saving boilers play an important part as does draught proofing and insulation. With regard to lighting, energy efficient bulbs can result in excellent energy savings.

Many building companies today are also considering the use of renewable energy systems, such as solar Power or wind power, and rainwater harvesting, which can be very cost effective as part of a larger development.

At the end of February 2007, 36 UK building companies formed the UK Green Building Council which aims to improve the sustainability of the building industry. Visit our UK Green Building Council page for more information.
