UK schools spend over £400 million every year on energy but there are simple savings to be made which will reduce energy spending and help the environment. To become an energy efficient school is not a difficult task and the most basic measures don’t require any investment. And an energy efficient school can also be one that actively involves pupils in energy saving by way of educating them about the benefits of reducing energy use.
The basic premise of being an energy efficient school is to have good housekeeping. 28% of school energy costs are down to lighting so this is a key area to address. Simply switching of lights and equipment when not required will show excellent savings. Classroom lights are often left on all day regardless of whether daylight is sufficient or anyone is even using the room! Ensure that someone is responsible for turning lights off. This could even be an energy monitor in each class. Using energy efficient light bulbs and even motion sensor lighting in areas such as toilets are also viable options for an energy efficient school.
