There are a few criteria to consider if you are looking for an energy saving heater. Generally electric storage heaters are more cost effective that fan heaters, oil filled radiators or radiant electric bar heaters as they use off peak electricity. The storage heaters heat up during the night and then give off the stored heat during the day. You should check with your electricity supplier, however, that you are on a tariff with an off peak period or whether one is available to you.
Some storage heaters have a thermostatic control which measures the temperature during the heating process. If the air temperature is milder less heat is stored as less should be needed during the day, thus saving energy and money. Whether or not your heater is strictly speaking an energy saving heater, there are a few other features you should look for. Some systems may have built in timers to ensure that the heaters are not left on for longer than necessary lengths of time. If not, you could perhaps use a timer on the plug socket. Also go for one with thermostatic controls so that the heat given out is reduced once the room reaches a certain temperature.
