17th April 2008, Times & Star – “Cumbria is one of the greenest areas of the country” according to an article in the Times & Star yesterday. 23rd November 2007, Energy Current – In energy saving news this week, permission has been granted for what will be the world’s largest biomass power generation plant. 19th November 2007, The BBC - The UK Energy Research Centre has published a report this month on the threat of the 'rebound effect' on energy savings. Basically the 'rebound effect' is the scenario whereby someone makes energy savings but then uses the money saved to buy something else which cancels out some or all of the savings made. 12th November 2007, The Scotsman – In energy saving news today, work begins on Europe’s first hydrogen-fuelled, zero carbon home in a small town on the Scottish borders. 22nd October 2007, The BBC – BT have announced plans for three large wind turbine sites designed to reduce their carbon emissions. 22nd October 2007, The Guardian – In energy saving news, a study released today claims that peak oil was reached in 2006 with production therefore set to decline steeply. 5th October 2007, The Telegraph – According to a newly published survey from the Readers’ Digest, Britain ranks only 25th out of 141 countries for being a desirable place to live with criteria including eco-friendliness. 28th September 2007, BBC – Air New Zealand has announced plans for a test flight of a Boeing 747 running on a mixture of kerosene and biofuel. 19th April 2007, BBC – Sainsbury’s are to ban their disposable plastic bags for a day on 27th April. They will instead be distributing their reusable, recycled bags to shoppers in a bid to encourage them to reuse rather than dispose of their shopping bags. 17th April 2007, Autocar – Nissan is aiming to be one of the first car manufacturers to bring a battery powered car to the marketplace. 2nd April 2007, The Energy Saving Trust – The Energy Saving Trust has launched their Green Barometer report which will index public opinion on green issues on a quarterly basis. Currently, their findings show that, whilst 80% of us believe that climate change is impacting the UK, only 40% of us are doing anything about it.
