The UK’s Fairtrade Foundation offers a scheme whereby it is possible to become a fairtrade church or synagogue. In agreeing to meet the Foundation’s criteria, becoming a fairtrade church or synagogue provides an opportunity to educate worshipers about this international movement which can help so many people less fortunate than ourselves.
In order to become a fairtrade church or synagogue the appropriate church council or meeting must agree to using fairtrade tea and coffee at their meetings, move forward on using other fairtrade products and promote fairtrade whenever possible. A Fairtrade Poster Certificate can then be awarded for display in the fairtrade church or synagogue.
In order to help promote fairtrade within the church or synagogue, the Fairtrade Foundation has put together a number of useful resources. You can find out where to buy fairtrade products from the product section http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/products.htm of their website and they also have ideas for worship, reflection and study as well as suggestions for inclusion in a church magazine. The ideas for churches include bible readings, prayers, activities and a list of additional resources which can found on their website at Fairtrade Church
It is also possible to become a fairtrade diocese or other denominational area, more information on which can be found here www.fairtrade.org.uk
