Fairtrade Fruit

Fairtrade Fruit

Today there is a very wide range of fairtrade fruit available and this is probably one of the most popular product ranges. The range of fairtrade fruit includes bananas, apples, avocados, lychees, citrus fruit, coconuts, grapes, mangoes, pears, plums and pineapples, and the fairtrade prices mean that the producers of these products have seen their lives change.

Bananas are the biggest selling fruit in the UK and most major supermarkets stock a selection of fairtrade bananas. In fact, Sainsbury’s announced in December 2006 that all their bananas would be fairtrade, and as they sell about 10 million bananas a week, this will more than double the amount of this fairtrade fruit sold in the UK. The Fairtrade Foundation website has some recipes using fairtrade bananas.

Some of the farms supplying fairtrade fruit such as citrus fruit, apples, grapes and pears are part of the South African Thandi initiative whereby workers become co-owners of the fruit farms. The fairtrade citrus fruits include oranges, lemons, clementines and satsumas.

Fairtrade orange juice is also available with a number of brands sold in the major supermarkets. Take a look at the relevant page of the Fairtrade Foundation website for more information.
