Whether you are in the building trade or simply involved in building your own home, there are a wide array of green building products to consider. Using green building products to build a home or any other building can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the building both in terms of the actual construction and during the building’s life.
Starting from the base up, as it were, there are green building products available for most if not all aspects of building. This could mean going back to traditional building methods and building so called ‘natural homes’, but there are also plenty of options for more modern buildings. Using reclaimed bricks or roof tiles, for example, is more environmentally friendly than using new ones. Any wood within the building, for example in a timber frame or for windows, should be FSC certified to ensure that it is from a sustainable source, and natural insulation and organic paint can also be used.
There are plenty of green building products for use inside buildings too, from eco friendly floor coverings to water saving toilets and showers. More on eco friendly plumbing can be found on our green plumbing products page.
Green building products also extend to the use of renewable energy in providing electricity and heat to the property. Building a new property is the perfect time to install renewable energy solutions as it can be more cost effective than retro-fitting. In addition energy efficiency measures can be implemented from day one, for example with energy saving boilers and low energy lighting.
If you are having your own home built, let builders know that you wish to be as eco friendly as possible in the build process and make sure that they provide you with green building choices.
