If you fancy a day out but would like to do something which leaves you with a clear conscience in terms of the environment, then you need a green day out. A green day out can be fun for everyone, including children, and can involve many if not all aspects of your day trip.
When planning your green day out, to start with think about how far you fancy travelling. There are often activities on our doorsteps which we think we can do ‘anytime’ but, as a result, never do! There may even be something within walking distance which will at least provide a carbon (and guilt) free journey. If not, think about whether you could visit somewhere using public transport. If you have children, this in itself can be part of the fun if it’s a bit of a novelty.
The main ‘green day out’ activity could be pretty much anything. Turn a walk through the countryside into a nature trail by taking along a book on birds or plants. Visit a local farm. The Soil Association has an extensive list of organic farms, many of which offer ‘extras’ such as farm shops, farm trails or cafes. You could join a Green Gym which involves working in the countryside for a few hours.
If you would like to visit an attraction, there are plenty with an ecological theme to try out so contact the Tourist Information office close to where you live or are staying for suggestions.
Wherever you visit, always try to make your trip sustainable by using the car as little as possible, keeping to designated foot/cycle paths, respecting wildlife and taking your rubbish home.
