Green coffins, also known as eco coffins, are becoming more popular in the UK as many of us consider the impact our lives, and deaths, have on the environment. The idea behind a green coffin is that it is as natural as possible in terms of the materials used in order that precious resources and materials are not used unnecessarily and that the coffin will decompose naturally. Green coffins are often part of a green funeral, more information on which can be found at our Green Funerals page.
Green coffins can be made from a wide variety of materials including bamboo, cardboard, willow, untreated pine and papier mache. They are designed to be biodegradable and are from sustainable sources where applicable. There are many beautiful options available, still providing plenty of choice in terms of the style of coffin and what this might represent in terms of how the deceased lived their life. For a more traditional feel, coffin covers are also available. These look exactly like a traditional coffin, but the body is contained within a separate, usually cardboard, coffin inside the cover. The cover is then removed prior to cremation or burial allowing it to be reused by the funeral director.
If you are interested in green coffins, your funeral director may be able to assist you with more information. As green funerals usually incorporate green coffins, it may also be worth visiting the Association of Natural Burial Grounds where you will find a list of green funeral companies.
