Whether you are building a new property or renovating an existing building, there are plenty of green plumbing products available to ensure that your water use is as low and environmentally friendly as possible. The use of green plumbing products can significantly reduce water usage, also therefore saving you money!
Of particular consideration for new buildings in terms of green plumbing products are greywater recycling systems which reuse water from hand basins, baths and showers for toilet flushing. In addition, rainwater harvesting is an excellent way of reducing mains water use. The simplest way to do this is to collect rain in a water butt for use in the garden or for cleaning the car. Larger buildings in particular can also make use of the water for toilet flushing by installing an underground tank with filtration.
Once these large scale green plumbing products have been considered and installed where appropriate, it is time to look at water saving measures within the property. The above measures will reduce dependence on mains water but will not actually reduce water usage overall. This is therefore where green plumbing products such as efficient toilets and water saving taps and shower heads come in. If you are putting in new sanitary ware you can choose from a wide selection of efficient systems, but you can also improve an existing bathroom with devices such as the Hippo device for toilet cisterns. For a toilet which uses no water at all you could even consider a compost toilet.
