We should all be doing our bit towards recycling as much as possible so why start home recycling if you don’t already do so? Home recycling is something which can, and should, involve the whole family and need not be an onerous task. Your local council probably already collects a significant amount of waste for recycling so will be able to give you details of what they can take and how it needs to be separated. Here are some ideas to help get you started.
If you want to reduce the amount of waste you produce as a start to your home recycling ‘programme’, why not keep a waste diary for a week. Each member of the family can take part and the Recycle More website has put together a document you could use. Hopefully you will see where the waste is coming from and what can be done to reduce this.
Secondly home recycling needs to be taken on board by everyone in the household, not least because if the wrong items go into the recycling when it is collected, this could contaminate a whole lorry load. Why not have separate Recycling Bins for different types of rubbish and label them accordingly. This is a good way to start getting the children involved too. They could make a poster showing what can and can’t be recycled as well as colourful, fun labels for the different bins. They can also learn about reusing items by making toys from what would normally be waste items. Take a look at the Recycling Guide website for some great suggestions.
By making home recycling simple and fun it need not become a chore and don’t forget that you will be having a positive environmental impact. Visit our recycling pages for lots more information on this topic.
