The Montague CX Comfort Folding Pedelec Electric Bike uses a pedelec system, meaning the SRAM Sparc Hub system senses when and how hard the pedals are being used. Your pedaling is converted into motor power which drives the rear wheel. The 21 speed CX Comfort Bike offers mountain bike performance with an added comfort package built right in to soften the ride. The special gel saddle and suspension seat post combined with an adjustable stem to position your handlebars lets you sit comfortably as you enjoy travelling through the town or pedaling the back roads. The big plus is the detachable battery which is easily removed to enable charging in the house and fits into a saddlebag attached to rear of the seat. Overall we felt the Kalkoff bike had a bit more power but the Montague bike is a lot lighter to ride especially when not using the pedelec system. It was also great to have a side stand when parking the bike.
The bike was tested on a 7.1 mile circuit (see graph at bottom of page) through the countryside with stretches of relatively flat roads but also many small hills, gentle inclines and two quite steep hills to test the performance of the bike over three different terrains. The conditions were quite good with moderate winds and dry road surface and little traffic to slow down the rider.
The power assistance control has an economy and full power mode and is very easy to use when riding and it was instantly noticeable that you were being given help in pedaling. The gears are excellent even when not using the electric power. The braking system was also as good with a disc brake on the front wheel. From a Green perspective it was also good to see the large cardboard box the bike was delivered in was recyclable.
The bike can certainly fill all the categories of Commuter, Recreational and Comfortable electric bike. The Montague CX Comfort Folding Pedelec Electric Bike folds to 36" x 28" x 12" and Team Hybrid do supply a free carry bag. It is available in 16", 18" and 20" frame sizes.
