More and more people are switching to organic food as a way of ensuring that what goes into their bodies is as natural as possible and free from masses of chemicals. So why not also think about organic beauty products to make sure that you are not bombarding your body with potentially harmful substances from the outside? Organic beauty products are becoming more widely available, from deodorant and shampoo to cosmetics so there is plenty of choice.
The skin is the human body’s largest organ and, whilst there is no absolute agreement on how much the skin absorbs, it certainly takes in some of what is put on it. With many of us, women in particular but also men and children, using a wide variety of products on our skin every day, organic beauty products are an excellent way of avoiding the absorption of chemicals.
Many products are labelled ‘natural’ but look for the COSMOS-Standard on these products to make sure their ingredient requirements are met. And even some ‘organic’ beauty products contain chemicals as not all the ingredients have to be organic. It is therefore a good idea to look for the Soil Association certification symbol, as they have rigorous rules about what can and can’t be used in organic beauty products. For example, none of their certified products contain parabens (chemical preservatives). For more information on this visit the Soil Association website.
We have reviewed a number of organic beauty products within our Green Product Reviews section so check out the Children’s Green Products and the Green Skincare & Beauty Products sections to see what we thought.
