Paint Recycling

How many of us have half-used tins of paint stored in our garages, sheds or lofts just in case we need it again? And when we decide we don’t, most of it gets thrown away and ends up in landfill sites. But paint recycling is possible, and will reduce the harmful environmental side effects of waste paint. There are in fact a couple of ways of paint recycling, so read on for more information.

Paint recycling reduces the incidence of paint entering the waterways and landfill sites. Paint should never be poured down drains or directly in a water course, as this can be harmful to wildlife. When disposed of in landfill sites, paint is also hazardous but millions of litres are disposed of this way every year.

Some local authority recycling centres may collect unused paint so it is worth checking whether paint recycling is available in your area. This often goes to a Community Repaint project – see below. To keep paint fresh, turn the tin upside down once the lid is on to prevent drying. If you have unused, unopened tins, the store from which it was bought will usually take the paint back, also meaning extra money back in your pocket!

The alternative way of paint recycling is to donate any leftovers to a Community Repaint project. There are numerous different types of project all around the country involved in reusing unwanted paint. This might be for use by charitable organisations, community projects or individuals in social need and is offered free of charge or for nominal fees. Visit the Community Repaint website for more information and details of projects in your area. You could also approach your local youth centre, school or other organisation which you think might benefit from unused paint, to see if they can put your waste to good use.
