The Radiator Booster (model RB1-707-TT) is designed to take hot air from behind your radiator and direct it using a fan into your room rather than at the wall, thus reducing heat loss and saving energy. The mains-powered product is expected to cost around 1p per week to run but should save money by heating rooms up more quickly thus allowing a boiler to shut down sooner.
The Radiator Booster came packaged in a simple cardboard box with the usage instructions printed on the box. The product proved to be very simple to set up by extending the telescopic tube to fit the radiator. In our case, the product did not extend the full length of the radiator but was simple to position centrally against the wall behind. The manufacturer considers the product sufficiently effective not to require an additional device in this situation.
The Radiator Booster was then plugged in, which is the only, rather inevitable, drawback with this product. As it is mains powered you will need a socket in the vicinity of the radiator or will need to trail the cable around the edge of the room. This won’t always be an issue but obviously care should be taken that the wire is not a trip hazard and that young children cannot reach the wire or indeed the product itself.
The product works by the use of a fan which automatically switches on when the built-in thermostat reaches a set temperature. It is possible to hear the fan running quietly and you can feel the warm air being blown out from the Radiator Booster if you put your hand nearby. Whilst it isn’t possible to accurately measure how much energy the product saves, it is logical that the action of the fan will help to heat the room more effectively which should in turn save energy.
I would suggest that the Radiator Booster is a great product to use in your most-frequented rooms which are usually those with radiators set to the highest temperatures. At around £19 each, the initial outlay for these products could add up if you were to buy them for a number of radiators, but, according to the packaging, they could pay for themselves within two winter months.
The box also contains details of how to keep the fan clean and what to do if there are any problems with the product. 99% of the Radiator Booster can be recycled and it should be disposed of through your local recycling scheme for electrical products.
