Recycling services in the UK are varied with more options available to us than ever before. Government targets are for 30% of household rubbish to be recycled by 2010 with local authorities responsible for making this happen. Recycling services differ from area to area but the trend is that these are on the rise as councils seek to increase the amount of waste recycled.
Recycling services consist of the following options, and we have also listed below other ways you can recycle which all go towards helping the environment.
- Kerbside collections – All local authorities in England must collect at least two items for recycling by 2010 and in many cases much more is already collected at kerbside. As each area differs, contact your local authority if you require information on what is collected in your locality.
- Recycling Centres - These can be the large ‘tips’ where rubbish is often now segregated, or the large collection bins which are available in most towns and villages.
- Collection companies – Trade and business waste is not usually collected by the local authority and you will have to make arrangements with a separate company. Lets Recycle has details of waste management companies and the recycling officer at your local council may also be able to give you some advice.
- Charity Recycling - Many charities take specific products such as ink cartridges and mobile phones as well the items which can be sold in their shops such as clothes or household items.
- Composting - This can be done at home and is a great way to recycle food waste and feed your garden!
