RenewableUK (formerly the British Wind Energy Association - BWEA) is the trade and professional body for the UK wind and marine renewable energy industries. Created in 1978, renewableUK is the leading renewable energy trade association in the UK with almost 650 corporate members. Set up originally to champion wind power, the association has also been involved with the promotion of wave and tidal energy since 2004, and now considers itself the ‘voice of wind and marine energy’.
The primary purpose of renewableUK is to promote the use of onshore and offshore wind, wave and tidal power in the UK. They are involved in research and co-ordinating statistics, they lobby the government and are an important information source for both the public and their members. In addition they are the organisers of various conferences and exhibitions.
With the UK recognised as having the most attractive market for wind energy, renewableUK promotes wind power in this country and also work closely with the European Wind Energy Association on matters of European policy. Wind power currently accounts for about 2.2% of the UK’s electricity generation, but this is expanding steadily.
RenewableUK has a comprehensive website, which includes a wide variety of information, including lists of the UK’s operational wind farms, those awaiting planning, those for which consent has been received and those in construction.
