Whether building a small or large development, there is more call for sustainable construction techniques and methods to be used in an industry which generates a significant proportion of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Sustainable construction techniques can be employed right through the development process and we touch on the main areas on this page.
The first area to look at in terms of sustainable construction techniques is actually to consider where developments are built. Not only do areas which are contaminated from a previous usage need to be made safe, but risks from factors such as flooding need to be taken into consideration as do drainage, services and waste management. Once a suitable location has been determined, it is important that the design of the area is sustainable, for example ensuring that the buildings will be energy efficient, make good use of local infrastructure and include where appropriate suitable recreational facilities.
When it comes to the build itself, sustainable construction techniques include ensuring that the construction methods and processes themselves have minimal environmental impact, in particular with regards to pollution and waste. Biodiversity of the area of development should also be considered both at this and the design stage.
The UK government department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) has put together a detailed Sustainable Construction Strategy which can be seen by following the link.
