I confess to getting confused at times about which fish are sustainable and which aren’t so, when I came across this free iPhone app, I hoped it would prove useful. The Sustainable Fish Guide uses information from the Greenpeace Red List, WWF fish info and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature & Natural Resources) Red List to compile its data.
The Sustainable Fish Guide is very straight forward to use with three lists to access – sustainable fishes, threatened fishes and a complete list. Their Tips & Info section also refers you to the data they have used. Looking at the complete list, if the fish shows a red cross next to it, it is a threatened species whilst a green tick indicates a sustainable fish. In each case you can click on the name of the fish for more information. This includes details of why a fish may be threatened as well as sustainable sources of the fish where applicable. In each case you can also access links to Wikipedia and Fishbase for more information on the individual fish.
This certainly is a useful application which would be easy to use whilst shopping for information on potential purchases. It is not an exhaustive list, however. Haddock, for example, isn’t included and salmon is shown under Atlantic and Pacific varieties making it trickier to find what you are looking for as there is no search function.
Overall, as a free product, this is a useful App which I will be keeping for future reference!
