The UK Green Building Council was founded in 2006 and officially launched in February 2007 at the Ecobuild exhibition in London. 36 built environment businesses became the founder members of the UK Green Building Council, including such well know names as Barrett Homes, Ecobuild, Johnson Controls Ltd and the Nationwide Building Society.
The UK Green Building Council is a member of the World Green Building Council (W-GBC) which currently has coverage in over eighty countries. As concerns about the effect of buildings on the environment rise, both in terms of their construction and their usage, the W-GBC including the UK Green Building Council looks at ways in which the construction industry can become more sustainable.
The mission of the UK Green Building Council is “to dramatically improve the sustainability of the built environment by radically transforming the way it is planned, designed, constructed, maintained and operated.” They have a number of key objectives including ensuring that sustainability is built-in and providing a knowledge base on sustainability matters.
