UPVC doors and windows are probably the most common choice of Double Glazing for modern homes. (Note that UPVC is the same as PVC-U; the name was changed to PVC-U in the late 1980s in line with other European countries. The term UPVC is still, however, commonly used). UPVC doors and windows offer a number of advantages over other window frame materials, as detailed below.
PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride and U stands for un-plasticised. This type of material is ideal for windows and doors as it does not rot or decompose, making it very low maintenance, is weather resistant, is tough, retains shape well and is recyclable. For these reasons UPVC doors and windows are a popular choice and are available in white (the cheaper option) or ‘wood look’ varieties.
Not all buildings are suitable for the fitting of UPVC doors and windows, in particular listed buildings in which they are not permitted. This is due to the fact that they are not thought to be able to offer the character required.
Double glazed UPVC doors and windows, along with products with frames in other materials, are assessed for energy efficiency under the British Fenestration Rating Council rating system. You can read more on this on our Double Glazed Windows and Doors page.
