Alternative Fuel Conversion

If you are thinking of buying a new car that runs on alternative fuel or converting your existing vehicle, you may be confused about all the options available. We have therefore put together this simple guide on alternative fuel conversion to help you come to the right decision for your circumstances.

STEP 1 - Do you wish to make an alternative fuel conversion to your current vehicle or buy a new one which uses an alternative fuel?

  • Check out our Diesel to Vegetable oil conversions page.
  • New car - Visit the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) Car Fuel Data website which has a series of databases including listings of those cars available to run certain alternative fuels. Alternatively speak to the car manufacturer you have in mind to see what they have available. Then go to step 3.
  • Alternative fuel conversion – Go to Step 2.

STEP 2 - Speak to your vehicle manufacturer or take a look at the approved companies list for conversions to LPG on the UKLPG website which includes contact details of installers. Now go to Step 3.

STEP 3 - Do you live in London or travel there regularly and therefore need to pay the congestion charge?

  • Yes – Take a look at the Powershift Register compiled by the Energy Saving Trust. This lists vehicles which are eligible for a 100% discount from the congestion charge. More information can be found at the Transport for London website. Please note that full electric vehicles are also exempt and can register for Exemption. Now go to Step 4.

STEP 4 - Visit our Alternative Fuel page and the individual fuel pages to see the benefits of the fuel you are considering.

STEP 5 - Even once you are using an alternative fuel, remember that you can economise and help the environment further. Visit our Eco Driving page for tips on how to make your driving as efficient as possible.
