We recycle all kinds of things nowadays, but perhaps one of the areas we don’t think of straight away is book recycling. This may be because many of us don’t regularly throw books away as they often quite precious items we like to go back to again and again. But book recycling is a great way of passing on books you won’t look at again or that you would like others to benefit from, and it is certainly better than sending them away in a rubbish truck!
There are many ways of book recycling, partly dependent on the types of books you have. Charity recycling is a good place to start as charities will usually accept most types of books in good condition. Alternatively you could give children’s books to the local hospital, children’s home or playgroup where they will no doubt be very much appreciated. Hospitals may also welcome books such as novels for adult patients.
If you would like to make some money from your second hand books there are again a number of ways of book recycling. If you have specialist books they may be on interest to a second hand book shop including those run by universities. Alternatively you could sell them online; there are a number of sites which allow you to list your book with either a percentage of the payment to go to the seller or a set amount per book. Car boot sales are also another way of book recycling, especially if you have a large number or are also trying to sell other items.
And don’t forget to buy second hand books yourself. You can often pick up a bargain with many books in ‘as new’ condition at a fraction of the normal selling price.
