Energenie Standby Shutdown

The Energenie is an automatic standby shutdown product, allowing you to switch appliances such as TVs, DVD players, radios and printers to standby, for example using a remote control, but ensuring that it is then switched off.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that we spend over £1 billion worth of energy by leaving our appliances on standby, so you can definitely save yourself money by using a product such as the Energenie if you are in this habit. I tried this out on the TV in our bedroom, which saved us getting out of bed to switch it off. Instead, we were able to use the remote control safe in the knowledge that the Energenie would switch the TV off completely for us.

The initial set up was simple, involving plugging the TV into the Energenie which in turn is plugged into the mains. You then use the appliance for at least five minutes to set up the Energenie. Subsequently you simply switch the appliance to standby and the Energenie will shut it down after two minutes. To switch it back on again simply press the green button on the Energenie.

The Energenie does use a tiny amount of power itself (0.4W) so it is still best to switch the appliance off completely yourself, but this product is ideal if any of your family can’t get out of the bad habit of leaving appliances on standby.

The Energenie came in a cardboard package made of part-recycled material without glue or plastic, so it can easily be recycled. At about £13 this product is competitively priced against similar products.
