Welcome to UK Energy Saving’s Energy Watch page. The Energy Watch page is where we keep you up to date with the latest energy saving ideas or those which might be particularly appropriate to the time of year.
As well as energy saving, also included on the Energy Watch page will be other areas covered by UK Energy Saving such as recycling and saving water, so keep popping back to see what our latest suggestions are.
February 2010 – St Valentine’s Day can, for some, be something to look forward to during the bleak winter months, but it is also an opportunity for commercialisation to take over resulting in unnecessary waste. So for all you romantics out there, here are UK Energy Saving’s thoughts for a greener St Valentine’s Day.
SENDING CARDS - Few of us would complain if we received a mystery Valentine’s card through our door, but before sending one this year (whether it’ll be a mystery or not), think about buying one made from Recycled Paper or, if you’ve got bits and pieces lying around which you could use, even making your own for that personal touch.
BUYING GIFTS - Classic Valentine’s gifts include flowers and chocolates, and it is very easy to go ethical with these presents. Buy Fairtrade or locally grown and/or organic flowers and Fairtrade and organic chocolates. If you tend to buy more expensive presents, think about whether your loved one really needs and will cherish the gift rather than buying something for the sake of it. Why not consider alternative gifts such as those available from Oxfam, WWF or Save the Children.
EATING OUT - Many couples go out for dinner to celebrate St Valentine’s Day, so this year why not try out an Organic Restaurant in your area or cook your loved one a meal made from local, Organic and/or Fairtraide Ingredients.
A WEEKEND AWAY - If you want to go the whole hog and fancy a weekend away to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, try out accommodation which has been classified by the Green Tourism Business Scheme and try to use Public Transport.
The UK Energy Saving team would also like to take this opportunity to offer you our best wishes for 2010.
