We are used to having showers in our homes, hotels, sports facilities and even workplaces, but there are still locations where getting a hot shower can be tricky! Which is where a solar shower can come in. A solar shower is, as the name suggests, a shower heated by the sun. As this may be more readily on hand than a mains-fed shower, you can get clean pretty much wherever you are!
A solar shower basically consists of a sturdy bag to hold water, usually 20 litres, which is put out in the sun in order to heat up. On a warm sunny day this should take about three hours, and there should be enough water for two or three people to take advantage of the solar shower. Once the water has heated up the bag simply needs to be suspended from a hook or tree (or even held up by a friend) in order for gravity to assist the water out through the shower head when the tap is opened. Voila, your very own outdoor shower!
A solar shower is a very inexpensive piece of kit which is ideal for camping trips, beach showering and festivals. No need to jump in the nearest (usually freezing cold) stream or queue for hours for a shower (by which time the water may well be cold and the shower area filthy). Simply hook up your solar shower and freshen up! If you would like a little more privacy than the nearest tree can offer, you can buy shower tents in which you can then hang your shower, but you can always wear your bikini or trunks and stay a little more al fresco.
